The Washougal Community Market wrapped up its pilot season this summer, bringing local flavor, small business energy, and community connection to downtown Washougal Friday afternoons at Reflection Plaza.
Over the course of six weeks, the market featured 22 local vendors, live music, family-friendly activities, and a rotating set of collectible Washougal tourism postcards that kept visitors coming back each week to complete the full series. The market quickly earned praise from both vendors and attendees for its warm, small-town atmosphere.
Cookies & Cream, a local Washougal-based cookie vendor and one of the market’s favorites, said the experience offered more than just an opportunity to sell. Owner Mary Casillas commented, “We loved being part of something local, right here in our own town. It wasn’t just about business—it felt like being part of a growing community tradition.”
The market attracted a mix of handmade goods, food, and locally produced items. Visitors responded especially well to fresh cookies, food options, and even specialty products like cast iron cleaner. Most vendors have already expressed interest in returning next season, and organizers are exploring ways to expand the selection—particularly fresh produce, baked goods, and bread—by reaching beyond city limits to tap into the regional market circuit.
“This market was really about creating a space that feels like Washougal—welcoming, local, and full of small-town heart,” said Rose Jewell, Community Engagement Manager and Market Coordinator. “We heard from so many people who loved the location and the relaxed, hometown feel of the plaza. It was encouraging to see not just strong turnout, but real enthusiasm from vendors and shoppers alike.”
Plans for next year’s market are already in motion, informed by lessons learned and community feedback from the pilot season.
The Washougal Community Market supports the City of Washougal’s Strategic Plan priority to Redefine Community Identity by helping establish a distinct, recognizable sense of place. Through local vendors, unique programming, and a welcoming atmosphere, the market fosters community pride and enhances the commercial appeal of downtown Washougal.
Mayor David Stuebe highlighted the market’s broader role in reinforcing Washougal’s sense of place and community by saying, “The Washougal Community Market is more than just a place to shop—it’s a place where neighbors connect, local businesses thrive, and the spirit of our city shines. It’s the kind of event that brings people together and strengthens the heart of Washougal.”
